HISTORY
✦ born into a fairly well-off family living in the greater toronto area, the younger of two sons
✦ david kwon is 7 years older than him & the focus of the family; is a prodigy in many ways & as the boys grow older, the favouritism towards the bolder & more confident older boy becomes clear
✦ ben very fond of his brother growing up, copying literally everything he does and wanting to play games with him all of the time, etc. david is kind and patient with him for the most part, though he distances as a teen.
✦ ben is too young to Understand what bias is and that his parents aren't giving him the same attention david always got, but david feels the pressure on him to be the Best He Can Be even in his first few years of high school. their parents are strict with them both and not exactly affectionate.
✦ when ben is 9, and david is 16, the older boy goes missing. like, missing missing - ben still remembers what it was like having police and all kinds of strangers coming around the house. he remembers standing at the top of the stairs and seeing his mother cry for the first time. ben was just old enough, and smart enough, at this point to understand that something was really really wrong; he learns the feeling of Anxiety
✦ their extended family & community (many of the korean and korean-speaking families involved in the area / his family's church, etc ) participate in searching for david, but ben's parents made an effort to keep ben's life relatively normal despite the chaos. he still attends elementary school, sunday school, korean classes and music lessons, etc. ben goes through the motions as obedient as ever to try t keep his parents happy and becuase if he's a good enough boy, maybe his brother will come back.
✦ with the support of some of his kindest family members, as well as the son of a family friend who becomes his childhood bestie, luke, ben is Okay and enjoys a relatively normal childhood.
✦ two years later, the authorities do find david; he's alive in some far-off city but he doesn't want to be contacted by his family, a wish that can be granted once someone comes of age. ben's parents tell him that david is okay, but that's it. it's not until he's much older that he understands that david refusing to come home had nothing to do with him.
✦ he continues to worry too much about not upsetting or disappointing his parents, especially his mother who never seems happy with anything he tries to do. it's not your fault, his father explains with exhaustion in his eyes on one of the few nights where ben tries to let out some of his sadness; she just misses him. please understand.
✦ in high school he daydreams a lot, is as drawn toward make-believe and adventure as he was as a child. he's gifted in some ways, but lacks the discipline to fully apply himself. he knows he'll always, always fall short of being the boy his parents are missing.
✦ and then david comes back. he's 8 years older and he looks the part; since dropping out of school he'd apparently been doing alright getting by on minimum-wage jobs in some far-off city where he'd been hiding up until he lost his most recent employment and his apartment; ben, 17 now, is overwhelmed, but thinks happy to have his brother back anyway.
✦ it's more awkward than anything. how do you re-establish a relationship with your favourite person after you've grown into a stranger to them? ben himself is almost an adult and thoroughly stuck in his own shell. neither boy knows how to interact.
✦ david's bird (the lazy ass named her polly) was a drunk impulse purchase of a few years prior; david leaves her cage in ben's room ("because there's more sunlight in there") and ben suffers.
✦ eventually, a few months later, david dips again - leaving the bird behind. ben Loses His Mind but accepts that without his care, the birdie will be neglected. he decides to name her something better ("arwen", from the book she tries to rip pieces out of) and begrudgingly loves her
✦ his parents are just as cold toward him as before, even after having david somewhat back in their lives. it's something that hurts ben a lot But he never quite figures out what to do about it
✦ he takes a gap year after high school to Chill after burning himself out academically, is a bit of a wild 18-19 year old (wild for his standards, anyway) and gets a taste of the Partier lifestyle. after this, he learns from luke that the university he's attending has dorms named after Lord of the Rings and decides that maybe it's a sign it should be his and arwen's new home. too.

001. ben takes a lot of naps bc he stays up super late and then wakes up every couple of hours. he's literally always tired but he's Blessed with being able to fall asleep quickly
002. he might seem pretty talkative online, but IRL, unless he's comfortable, he's pretty quiet. he has enough manners and tact to keep up a conversation but one will notice that he observes and listens a lot, unless he gets going about a topic he's excited about adfskdfj
003: his main quirks: a ton of elipses (...), hyperboles, memes to express feelings, one or two basic emojis, lowkey keysmashes (which is something he learned from twitter...). recently he's been mixing up you and u all the time, it depends how fast he's trying to type.
004: he has a fairly good understanding of Memes and Internet Humour due to the fact that almost all of his time is spent on a computer. he's involved in several english-speaking discord servers to help him out with understanding his schoolwork, as well as connecting with some of his fandoms, and this is where he got most of his memes (outside of twitter)
005: he's............really weird. he has a lot of thoughts that he doesn't share with most people and again those thoughts are probably fairly influenced by the internet.
006: he hates thunderstorms because he got stuck in a tornado warning once when he was a kid and they give him stomachaches
007: he's actually pretty good w/ his alcohol despite his Tiny Body, he'll just get more talkative and giggly
008: in terms of nerd stuff he's willing to try to get into anything sci-fi or high fantasy related but he's only really invested in star wars and lotr for the most part
009: big nutte: ELVES. also dragons. and anything to do with the knight and lord/lady trope makes his heart melt
010: in terms of past relationships he hasn't had... many, but there have been a few and almost all of them ended on good terms.
011: his biggest celebrity crush rn is oscar isaac but he'll always have a place in his heart for rachel mcadams
